Review of breakkup.com website

Unsure on your current relationship? Can’t decide whether to break it off? Well fear not, the interweb is here to save the day. Simply outline your dilemma at breakkup.com (note the two k’s) and randoms from across the internet will vote to break up or stay together.  In addition they offer a paid break up service where they will send a professionally written message by email or old fashioned snail mail, if you can’t pull the trigger yourself.

Pros:

  • Clean, easy to browse site
  • Good content that is fun to read

Cons:

  • Some content is boring, they should add celebrity content and other content that will attract visitors
  • Visitor retention problems as they have had traffic in the past, but people are not staying
  • Cons:
Most content has the feel of being written by 13-15 year olds. (At least at present.)
If you're looking for unbiased advice, a site promoting breaking up with someone may not be the be place to it.
Current voting system is biased towards breaking people up. The "chill out" voting options have no effect. Like this to a presidential election - how would you feel in a 2 party system where you could only vote for one party. To not vote for the other party you simply do not vote. As voting is compulsory (in Australia), people who do not vote receive a fine. As voting is optional (in the US), people who are too lazy to vote will be deemed as voting for a party regardless.

The numbers are skewed and not an accurate reflection of opinion on an issue.
  • I don't believe we have a visitor retention problem (lots of signs are starting to point toward addiction :)), so if you're looking at stats such as Compete.com as shown on CrunchBase then you're not seeing our iPhone / iPod Touch usage which represents more than 90% of our traffic. Our new goal is driving app users to the main website, which we're in the process of doing right now.

BreakkUp is averaging 125 *new* accounts a day and ~1.5m pageviews a month. By utilizing our own ad system, we're able to market our premium iPhone / iPod apps ranging from $.99 - $3.99 at virtually $0 cost.

We're only a month and a half "live" on the AppStore, we're just getting started. :)

    Hi Colin,

Thanks for the feedback, I am glad to hear you are having so much success with the iPhone application. To be honest, I don't think any of us knew you had an iPhone app. I just now noticed a random advert that sometimes appears on your site mentioning the app, but it doesn't seem obvious otherwise. Perhaps you could highlight the application in a more permanent location on the home page?

Good luck with the rest of your growth, we would love to get your feedback/participation on a future podcast.

  • Hey mike,

No worries... we've got a few ads cycling on BreakkUp.com, only one of them mentions the free iPhone app and there is a small plug on our about page.

Most of our traffic is a RESULT of the iPhone app, we haven't done a significant amount of marketing around BreakkUp.com with the exception of a few press releases. It's too costly to market a freemium service right now, especially since we're only a team of 2 bootstrapping / working on said project.

The free app in the AppStore has accelerated growth tremendously. Two weeks ago we were seeing 500+ downloads a day and almost 250 new accounts a day... it's slowed some (300 downloads, 100-150 new accounts), but that's only until our next app update.

Give me a shout through our corporate website, wouldn't mind talking about our experience in more detail on your podcast.

    Best,
    Colin
